Troops unable to hold off DR Congo rebels

Buenos Aires News.Net Sunday 18th November, 2012

Rwanda has been accused by the DR Congo government of supporting the rebels, who deserted government ranks earlier this year.

At the time the rebels accused the government of failing to respect a 2009 peace deal which had ended a previous rebellion in the capital of North Kivu.

On Sunday, following four days of clashes with government troops, the rebels pushed forward to replace UN peacekeepers who have their headquarters near North Kivu.

Over 6,500 government forces had been sent to the area to try to fend off the rebel advance.

Goma, on the Rwandan border, is home to one million people, some of whom have been left homeless by the war.

More than 5 million people are estimated to have died from factors related to wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 1998.
