FIRST ON 3: Southport manager's resignation letter suggests mayor & alderman micro-managed city

READ MORE:

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- WWAY has obtained a copy of the resignation letter given to the Southport Board of Aldermen from City Manager Pat Thomas.

He gave the board 60-days notice in a hand-delivered resignation letter Friday evening. He's only been in the position for about a year.

In the letter, Thomas says his expectations running Southport in a council/manager type government don't match up with Mayor Robert Howard's vision and the board.

Here's what he sent them Friday:

February 15, 2013

Mayor and Aldermen
City of Southport
201 East Moore Street
Southport, NC 28461

Dear Mayor and Aldermen:

I am writing to provide, as required by my employment agreement, the 60-day notice of my resignation as city manager, effective April 16, 2013.

I appreciated the offer to serve the Board and the citizens of Southport ? which I fully intended t ocontinue for the foreseeable future ? and I have endeavored to consistently perform the responsibilities of city manager with diligence and dedication. However, I have found the framework and process of municipal government in Southport to be significantly different than anticipated in a council-manager jurisdiction. This has made it difficult for me to realize the degree of satisfaction and accomplishment from my work that I desire, based on my professional background and abilities.

After substantial reflection, I have concluded that it would be best for me to step aside in order to allow the Board to select a manager whose own job expectations may be more consistent with the style of governance desired by the Board.

I regret any inconvenience occasioned by my resignation ? which is not submitted for the purpose of accepting another job offer? and I offer my best wishes for the future progress and success of Southport, a very unique and dynamic community.

Yours in public service,

Patrick A. Thomas
City Manager
