Now you?re starting to really talk about $100,000 of value.

Sadly, drug companies tend to be more interested in satisfying the short-term profit desires of their investors than they are in truly delivering cost-effective care to patients. . .

Well, it's like this: we realize that people want inexpensive drugs that work great. But we have an awful time delivering anything like that. As I've said before here, we keep swinging for those fences and missing. That's why these drugs come out, the ones that only extend life span for a limited amount of time: every one of those are drugs that people had higher hopes for, but that's how they performed in the real world, so out they come onto the market to do as best they can. It's the same program that Holmes, suspected of killing 12 patrons and injuring 58 at a movie theater last week, recently dropped after his first year.

Interviews with top directors of the university's graduate program, and others outside the school, provide a glimpse into the lives of those who choose such a rigorous course of study. The Colorado program has been largely shuttered to public view since Holmes' arrest July 20, a month after he announced plans to abandon his graduate studies there.

The interviews on that campus were conducted on the basis that Holmes not be discussed, but what emerges is a vivid portrait of the intense world in which the 24-year-old student lived over the last year.

In this rarefied and often high-pressure environment, students who are already near the best of their game are asked to exponentially expand their capabilities, frequently under stiff competition, and often in isolation.

The $126-million-a-year neuroscience program, which includes a new Center for NeuroScience, in recent years has developed the basis for drugs for the treatment of Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease and discovered that eating disorders such as bulimia can trigger alterations in the brain's reward circuits. It has also revealed that the brains of mice can be profoundly affected by the kind of cages in which they're kept, raising questions about some of the most fundamental experiments in biological science.

Housed in gleaming new research buildings on the Aurora campus, the program is one of dozens that have multiplied across the country over the last 20 years as researchers have begun to develop the modern tools needed to scrutinize and measure the inner workings of the brain.

"A lot of the effort prior to 1970 was just trying to define, to map the nervous system?. But once a lot of that was defined, it required all these other disciplines to come into the community of neuroscience to take the next step," said Barry Shur, dean of the University of Colorado-Denver's graduate school.

Just 35 students are enrolled in the doctoral training segment, an intense, five-to-six-year journey through the dense frontiers of neuroanatomy, cell biology, genetics and pharmacology. First-year students are plunged into fundamental course work accompanied by a trio of lab rotations designed to help them select an area of research.

"The transition from the student to the researcher is the whole goal," said Diego Restrepo, co-director of the neuroscience center. "The student has to demonstrate the independence, the curiosity, the creativity to ask questions that can be translated into an experiment that will produce data that will ? give you an answer to your question."

Students are closely monitored but, at Denver and at most top schools, quickly begin to take ownership of their own progress. "We're taking really, really smart students who have a pretty good idea of what they want to do and making sure they have the tools to start out, and then we set them loose," said John Ngai, director of the graduate program in neuroscience at UC Berkeley.

The pace rapidly becomes robust and the competition severe, as students jockey for the best-funded labs, aim to have their work published in scientific journals and spend long, sometimes exhausting hours in the lab endlessly repeating and redesigning experiments.

"I think my first student got away with a 40-hour week, though most students spend significantly more than that, probably 50 or 60. And some of them much more," said Louis F. Reichardt, neuroscience program director at UC San Francisco.

"There are experiments where you have to have data points every half hour, and when that happens, you put a cot in the lab and you check it all through the night ? I've done that," said Shur. "What we expect is the students to be self-motivated, passionate, and not have to be told to go into the laboratory."

The work can be isolating drudgery. Graduate students' lab hours are often spent alone in tiny, sterile rooms ? rats and mice their only companions ? before the students go home to study. Some students spend years breeding rodents to develop needed models to study memory conditions; others take days to recover information using electrophysiology from the brain of a single rat after an experiment.

"There's a lot of time when you're just alone, [and] it's very easy to get lost in those periods of isolation," said Shawn E. Nielsen, a fourth-year doctoral student at UC Irvine whose interest in neuroscience began when her then-13-year-old sister began suffering epileptic seizures and associated memory losses.

Lawyers File Emergency Motion to Stop Mandate | Women of Grace

In an effort to prevent the Department of Health and Human Services? birth control mandate from going into effect on August 1, the Thomas More Law Center (TMLC) has filed an emergency motion asking a federal district judge to stop the rule that would force most employers to cover birth control in their employee health plan with no co-pay.

According to a press release from the TMLC, the motion was filed on Wednesday afternoon with Federal District Judge Robert Cleland of the Eastern District of Michigan on behalf of Legatus, a Catholic business organization founded in 1987 by Tom Monaghan, former owner of Domino?s Pizza, Legatus member Daniel Weingartz of Weingartz Supply Co.

?We have asked Judge Cleland to set a court hearing on our motion for the earliest possible time to prevent immediate injury to our clients? right of conscience. Without the court?s intervention, the HHS mandate effectively penalizes their free exercise of religion,? said Erin Mersino, the lead counsel in the lawsuit.

A lawsuit was filed on behalf of Legatus and Weingartz on May 6, 2012 with the intent to permanently block the implementation of the HHS Mandate which requires employers and individuals to obtain insurance coverage for abortions and contraception on the grounds that it imposes clear violations of conscience on Americans who morally object to abortion and contraception.

The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the HHS Mandate under the First Amendment rights to the Free Exercise of Religion and Free Speech and the Establishment Clause.?? It also claims that the HHS Mandate violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 and the Administrative Procedure Act.

Although the president gave a one-year extension to certain religious employers, businesses owned by Christians who oppose contraception ?have no safe harbor and no exemption within the law,? Mersino told Politico, which is why they filed the emergency motion ?to alert the court there is an imminent danger.?

The motion for a temporary restraining order focuses on violations of the Plaintiffs? rights guaranteed by the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center commented, ?The Obama administration deliberately declared war on the Catholic Church by promulgating the HHS Mandate. And contrary to what they want you to believe, this case is not about contraception.? It is about the religious freedom of Christians, in this case Catholics, to peaceably practice their faith free from government coercion. If the government succeeds in this case, the religious freedom of all Christians is in danger.?

Judge Cleland has scheduled a conference on the case for today and could schedule a hearing at that time.

HTI to report financial results Thursday - Hutchinson Leader ...

Hutchinson Technology will report fiscal 2012 third quarter financial results on Thursday, July 26, after the close of the market. A subsequent conference call for the investment community will take place at 4 p.m.

Individual investors and news media may participate in the conference call via a webcast, which will be accessible live and on an archived basis on Hutchinson Technology's web site at www.htch.com/investors. The webcast also will be distributed by Thomson StreetEvents to both institutional and individual investors at www.earnings.com.

Earlier? this month, the company said it shipped approximately 100 million suspension assemblies during its fiscal 2012 third quarter ending June 24, compared to 96.9 million in the preceding quarter, but below its previous projection of 105 million to 115 million.

The company said its shipments of suspension assemblies during the last five weeks of its fiscal third quarter declined more than 15 percent compared to the first eight weeks of the quarter, as demand from its customers softened.

The company's average selling price declined to 58 cents from 63 cents in the fiscal 2012 second quarter and from 59 cents in the fiscal 2011 third quarter. As previously disclosed, the higher average selling price in the preceding quarter was primarily due to an increased volume of development products for new disk drive programs.

The decline in average selling price, combined with lower than expected shipments, resulted in net sales of approximately $60 million for the fiscal 2012 third quarter compared to $65.5 million in the fiscal 2012 second quarter.

The company also noted that it has resumed production at its Thailand assembly operation and has shipped suspensions from the operation for customer qualification.

Nice question! This is a form of cancer that grabs my interest immediately it's mentioned. I'm so much interested in it because it runs in my family. My great-grandfather suffered it. My grandfather got his prostate removed in 1990. Two of my granny's brothers has already done a prostate removal surgery called called prostatectomy. It reoccured in one of them and he has since succumbed to it.

Prostate is only found in men. It functions to nourish the sperm. It is the only organ that continues to grow throughout life. Its diseases can be prostatitis, benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostate cancer, etc. Prostate cancer is a disease of the elderly. It occurs in mostly people that are 50 and above. Though it might occur much earlier. Its symptom can vary. But some of the important ones are hematuria, waist pain, constipation, urinary incontinence, weight loss or even dysuria, urgency, terminal dribbling, frequency, weak stream, etc. Its symptom is related to its degree of spread.
It can be detected early, and when this is done, surgeons aims for a cure. Some investigative modalities like Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA) can predict the transformation in the prostate. The result of the PSA will guide the surgeon on whether to perform biopsy. The treatment is often called radical prostatectomy. Again the choice of the surgery is determined by the degree of spread of the cancer.
In late stage presentation, surgeons aims at palliation. This involves the removal of the influences that aids the growth and the spread of the cancer. Surgeons often remove the testis with the administration of drugs that blocks the androgen production in the body. They call it total androgen blocade. The aim at this stage is to alleviate the patients

The thing is it's not just risky se.xual behaviour, you can still get hpv just by sleeping with one person.----(Mistaken)Most sexu.ally active people will get it at one point in their lifetime.

For the contraceptive pill, it says you are at a higher risk of getting cancer(I think cervical cancer) using it for more than 5years but it also says it reduces your chance of getting cancer(I think bosom cancer).

I don't know whether they have the hpv vaccination in Nigeria.

I lost my younger brother (Graduate) aged 24 on May 2, 2012 to Leukaemia (cancer that affects the blood cells). The strange thing was that he never manifested any of the symptons listed except for his loss of weight, bleedin gums (which we attributed to his regular visit to his Dentist). But aside from these, he looked ok.
The only treatment is God's factor and early diagnosis cos if its too late you are a dead man walking.

'Missile' homing in on world record at Olympics

LONDON (AP) ? Without the Thorpedo, James "The Missile" Magnussen is Australia's new weapon in the pool.

The 100-meter freestyle world champion is at his first Olympics and still pretty new to the game at 21, but he's already made a significant impact.

While Ian Thorpe didn't qualify for the Olympics, Magnussen swam the fastest 100 freestyle ever in a regular textile suit at the Australian trials this year in 47.10 seconds.

Magnussen is pretty straight talking, too, and already in sight of Cesar Cielo's world record of 46.91.

"I think the times I set at trials would point to it (a world record) definitely being a possibility," Magnussen said Monday. "But to be completely honest with you I've come here to win gold, not break world records. At this stage, I think a world record would just be a bonus."

Australia's world champion 100 freestyle relay team also was "absolutely" the team to beat at the Olympics, he said.

It didn't come over as arrogant or trash talking. Just telling it like it is.

"I don't see how you wouldn't be the team to beat coming off a world championship win," Magnussen said.

While Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte is the contest everyone wants to watch at the London Games, Magnussen spearheads the Australian team against its American rivals and will lead the title chase in the 100 free and 100 freestyle relay ? two of the marquee swimming events.

Swimming is one of the first sports, with medals decided as soon as Saturday ? the second day of the games. Phelps arrived in town Monday.

"And the wait is over... Finally here in (hashtag)London," the 14-time Olympic champion tweeted.

While Phelps will be competing in the Olympics for the last time, this is just the start for Magnussen ? Australia's new hope in the pool.

"I feel like if I can overcome the pressures from back home that I know are there. I'm sure I can better my results from last year at the world championships and get the job done," Magnussen said of his battle with 50 and 100 freestyle world-record holder Cielo.

"I know that Cesar holds both world records and I do respect him for that, but I think I'm in a good position to win this one."

The 100 relay has a big history to live up to in London after Jason Lezak's come-frome-behind surge for the United States on the last leg in Beijing four years ago.

That gave Phelps one of his record eight gold medals and led to pumped-up American celebrations on the edge of the pool ? one of the lasting images of that games.

"I loved that race. One of my favorite Olympic moments," Magnussen said. "That anchor leg by Jason Lezak is a swim I could only ever dream to emulate. It was such an exciting moment in Olympic sport and such a monumental moment in swimming and is something that I'll remember forever."

Remembering that he'll probably anchor favored Australia against the Olympic title holder in the relay in London, he added: "We are aware of the Americans' ability to come from behind and forge an upset like that."

Also on Australia's swim team in London are Beijing gold medalists Leisel Jones and Stephanie Rice.

Jones will become the first Australian swimmer to compete in four Olympics, while Rice's rocky buildup to the games ? where she's been hampered by both injury and scandal ? leaves her uncertain of her chances.

The 200 and 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay gold medal winner in Beijing has come through serious shoulder injuries and surgery to make London.

And at least two social media controversies, including a Twitter rant following an Australia rugby game in 2010 that cost her endorsements and led to her being criticized at home.

"It wouldn't be high-pressure preparation without something going not to plan but I feel like I'm really capable of handling things like that at the moment," Rice said of a recent neck problem that's added to the worries. "I'm going to put everything on the line. It hasn't been the perfect prep but we will see what happens."
