TBS extends Conan O'Brien's 'Conan' talk show into 2015

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Conan O'Brien's late-night talk show has been extended through November 2015, U.S. cable network TBS said on Monday.

"Conan" debuted in November 2010 following O'Brien's acrimonious split with broadcaster NBC after his brief stint as host of the network's flagship "The Tonight Show."

O'Brien's show gets about 900,000 viewers per episode - well below those of rivals Jay Leno, David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel - but it has a younger median audience age than the other U.S. late-night talk shows, TBS noted.

"We are proud to extend our relationship with Conan as he continues to forge the future of late night," Michael Wright, TBS president and head of programming, said in a statement. "I just wish we didn't decide to tell him on April Fools' Day."

O'Brien, 49, who is known for his fervent fan base, broke into late-night television with the "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" talk show on NBC in 1993. He held that spot until 2009, when he took over for Leno as host of "The Tonight Show."

Seven months later NBC gave the show back to Leno after his new show failed to gain traction in an earlier time-slot.

TBS is owned by Time Warner Inc.

Margin notes shed new light on Renaissance anatomy masterpiece

When the Renaissance physician and expert dissector Andreas Vesalius first published "De humani corporis fabrica" in 1543, he provided the most detailed look inside the human body of his time.

A previously unknown copy of the impressive anatomy textbook resurfaced a few years ago, and it apparently contains more than a thousand hand-written notes and corrections by the author himself. The annotations reveal that Vesalius was meticulously planning a third edition of the book that never made it to print, researchers say.

"This book is his work bench as much as the dissecting table," Vivian Nutton, a University College London professor emeritus, writes in a recently published analysis of the text in the journal Medical History.

Some edits show that Vesalius wanted to correct mistakes of grammar and syntax and to make his Latin more elegant. Other markings show that he wanted to draw attention to misshapen or illegible letters for his block-cutter. Vesalius also intended to add new information to the text as he learned more about the human body, including what may be one of the oldest references to the practice of female genital mutilation.

In his discussion of circumcision, Vesalius scrawled at the bottom of the page that Ethiopians "cut off the fleshy processes from new born girls in accordance with their religion in the same way as they remove the foreskins of boys, 'although in their religious ceremonies they are otherwise generally similar to those of us Christians,'" Nutton writes. "This is arguably the first reference in a medical text to female genital mutilation for non-medical purposes."

The copy of the book, on loan from an unnamed German collector, is currently available for study at the University of Toronto's Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library.

"He is seen constantly attempting to improve his text both scientifically, and stylistically, and to make it clearer and more accessible to his readers," Philip Oldfield, science and medicine librarian at the University of Toronto, said in a statement this week. "All the evidence points to the conclusion that Vesalius was preparing a new edition of De fabrica that unfortunately never materialized."

The book will be featured as part of an exhibition next year in Toronto to mark the 500th anniversary of Vesalius's birth.

APNewsBreak: Gas trade group seeks fracking probe

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? A formal complaint filed with New York's lobbying board asks it to investigate whether Artists Against Fracking, a group formed by Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon, is violating the state's lobbying law.

The complaint obtained by The Associated Press was made by the Independent Oil & Gas Association to the state Joint Commission on Public Ethics.

The energy trade group based its request for an investigation on an AP report that found that Artists Against Fracking and its advocates didn't register as lobbyists. Registration requires several disclosures about spending and activities.

A spokesman for Artists Against Fracking says the group's activities are protected because they were made during a public comment period. He also says celebrities involved in the group are protected because they are longtime activists, not lobbyists.

They held their noses and couldn?t get outside quickly enough. It was a large house in a good neighborhood, and probably fixable at the right price, but they couldn?t stay in the house long enough to evaluate it, even after making a repeat visit.

No, please don?t. Just because your teenager likes to sleep until early afternoon, please don?t invite potential buyers into your house until you have done a complete sweep for animals and kids hiding under the covers. Lights Out

Another big no-no. Drapes drawn, unlit lamps and light switches in the ?off? position can give the impression that a stakeout is in progress. There is good reason on a hot summer afternoon to have shades drawn and lights low to keep things cool, but if you are trying to sell your house, you need to keep things turned on and opened up in order to highlight the best features of each room. Incandescent lamp lighting is most flattering to the human complexion, so if you truly want buyers to say they can ?see? themselves living there, then help them to see themselves at their best in ?their? home.

Pictures ARE Worth a Thousand Words

Before any buyer even thinks of stepping into your listed house, he or she has seen many pictures of it before asking to see the real thing. Don?t reduce your odds of a showing by displaying unflattering pictures of your fantastic home. You don?t need to hire a professional photographer or buy a fancy new camera just to market your home. Do take clear, well-lit and composed (aka staged or styled) pictures of the best parts of the house.

Leave kids, animals, paper piles, open cupboards, and your bathroom toiletries out of the pictures.?Your house can be beautifully staged, but if the pictures on the real estate websites don?t get your ?customer? in the door, then your staging dollars and efforts will not even get one chance to pay off. Tell your buyers with pictures what you can?t tell them with words.

Can spoil the whole bunch. Remove the bad apples and polish up the good ones. Homebuyers are savvier than you may think. Even though you have never met them, you are preparing your home to become theirs, and you only get one shot at it. Don?t spoil their first or last impression.

Melt 'causes Antarctic sea ice rise'

Climate change is expanding Antarctica's sea ice, according to a scientific study in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The paradoxical phenomenon is thought to be caused by relatively cold plumes of fresh water derived from melting beneath the Antarctic ice shelves.

This melt water has a relatively low density, so it accumulates in the top layer of the ocean.

The cool surface waters then re-freeze more easily during Autumn and Winter.

This explains the observed peak in sea ice during these seasons, a team from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in De Bilt says in its peer-reviewed paper.

Climate scientists have been intrigued by observations that Antarctic sea ice shows a small but statistically significant expansion of about 1.9% per decade since 1985, while sea ice in the Arctic has been shrinking over past decades.

The researchers from the KNMI suggest the "negative feedback" effect outlined in their study is expected to continue into the future.

They tried to reproduce the observed changes in a computer-based climate model.

The sea ice expanded during Southern Hemisphere autumn and winter in response to the development of this fresh, cool surface layer, which floated on the denser, warmer salty sea water below.

This fresh water is ultimately derived from enhanced melting at the base of the Antarctic ice shelves.

"Sea ice around Antarctica is increasing despite the warming global climate," said the study's lead author Richard Bintanja, from the KNMI.

"This is caused by melting of the ice sheets from below," he told the Reuters news agency.

But there are other plausible explanations for Antarctic sea-ice expansion.

Paul Holland of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) stuck to his findings last year that a shift in winds linked to climate change was blowing ice away from the coast, allowing exposed water in some areas to freeze and make yet more ice.

"The possibility remains that the real increase is the sum of wind-driven and melt water-driven effects, of course. That would be my best guess, with the melt water effect being the smaller of the two," he told the London Science Media Centre.

The study in Nature Geoscience also asserts that the cool melt water layer may limit the amount of water sucked from the oceans that falls as snow on Antarctica. Cold air can hold less moisture than warm air.

Pope appeals for peace in Easter message

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis used his first Easter Sunday address to call for peace in the world and appealed for a diplomatic solution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula.

In his first "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message, Francis also called for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, an end to the civil war in Syria, and political solutions to conflicts in several African countries.

The former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, who has made defense of nature an early hallmark of his pontificate, also condemned the "iniquitous exploitation of natural resources" and urged everyone to be "guardians" of creation.

Francis delivered his message from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica - the same spot from where he first appeared to the world as pope after his election on March 13 - to a crowd estimated by the Vatican at least 250,000 people.

"Peace in Asia, above all on the Korean peninsula: may disagreements be overcome and a renewed spirit of reconciliation grow," he said, speaking in Italian.

North Korea said on Saturday it was entering a "state of war" with South Korea. Tensions have been high since the North's new young leader Kim Jong-un ordered a third nuclear weapons test in February, breaching U.N. sanctions and ignoring warnings from North Korea's sole major ally, China, not to do so.

Francis, who has brought a more simple and personal style to the papacy, said the message of Easter is that faith can help people transform their lives by letting "those desert places in our hearts bloom".

GUARDIANS OF CREATION

"How many deserts, even today, do human beings need to cross! Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbor, when we fail to realize that we are guardians of all that the creator has given us and continues to give us," he said.

Earlier, at a Mass in a square bedecked by more than 40,000 plants and flowers, the pope wore relatively simple white vestments, as opposed to his predecessor Benedict, who preferred more elaborate robes.

The huge crowd spilled out of St. Peter's Square and into surrounding streets and included many who had come to see a pope they hope could give a new start to a Church that has been marred by scandals involving sexual abuse of children and allegations of corruption.

"It's a new pope and new beginning," said Tina Hughes, 67, who came to Rome with her family from Nottingham, England to see the pope. "I think he brings something special. He connects with people. I feel good about him."

Francis, who took his name in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who is revered as a symbol of austerity and the importance of the natural world, said:

"Peace in the whole world, still divided by greed looking for easy gain, wounded by the selfishness which threatens human life and the family, selfishness that continues in human trafficking, the most extensive form of slavery in this 21st century.

"Peace to the whole world, torn apart by violence linked to drug trafficking and by the iniquitous exploitation of natural resources! Peace to this our Earth! May the risen Jesus bring comfort to the victims of natural disasters and make us responsible guardians of creation."

Easter Sunday, the day Christians believe Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion, was the culmination of four hectic days of activity for the pope, during which he instituted several novelties.

On Holy Thursday, two women were included among the 12 people whose feet he washed and kissed during a traditional ceremony that had previously been open only to men.

Francis is still living in the same Vatican guesthouse where he stayed during the conclave that elected him the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, instead of moving into the regal papal apartments in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace.

He has also been inviting ordinary people to his morning Mass at the guesthouse, including Vatican street sweepers and gardeners.

Full-face transplant recipient marries woman he met in burn support group

On Saturday, the North Texas man who was one of?the first Americans to receive a full face transplant married another burn patient he met at a support group.

Dallas Wiens, of Fort Worth, was severely injured in a bizarre construction accident in 2008 when he came in contact with a high-voltage power line.

Jamie Nash, of Garland, nearly died in a car crash in Ennis in 2010. Her car erupted in flames, and she was trapped. She was severely burned on her hands, back and legs.

The couple?became engaged last fall.

Wiens and Nash exchanged vows Saturday morning at the Fort Worth church where Wiens was working when he was injured.

The couple?celebrated with a reception in downtown Fort Worth. They invited?their doctors and nurses.

Relationship built on hope
The couple met in a support group at Parkland Hospital, where both were being treated.

"I was drawn to him. I just had to meet him," Nash said in November. "I just looked at him from across the room, and there was something about him."

Wiens said he wasn't interested -- at first.

"I had sworn off love and relationships," he said. "I had no desire to be in one whatsoever."

Then, on Christmas Eve, they talked all night and set up a date.

"We went to dinner and a movie, and that's all she wrote," he said.

The two said they have been together every day since.

"I told him it's got to be love, because I'm not sick of you," Nash joked. "I know I've never felt more real than this."

The couple plans to put their pasts behind them.

"There's no reason to dwell on the past," he said.

"It's dead and gone," she added. "It burned in the fire."

They said they make the perfect couple and help balance each other.

Her hands, for example, were severely injured in her accident. His are fine.

She can see. He lost his eyesight in the accident.

"It's a story of hope, a story of true survivors," Nash said. "I mean, if we can do it, I guarantee you, anybody out there -- we all have a story. We're all going through something. And I want to give everybody hope."
