Action Launcher 1.2.0 update brings new search feature, improves covers
If you're using Chris Lacy's Action Launcher, there's a pretty sizable updating waiting for. Version 1.20 brings a helpful search feature right there in the Action Bar. It's able to search through your contacts, apps and even music, giving the results there there on the home screen. Action Launcher's unique "Covers" -- think folders with more functionality -- have gotten even better and now serve as app shortcuts as well as a folder with more options inside. There also are options to hide apps from the app list, some visual changes, and you can import home screens from other third-party launchers.
We've got the entire changelog after the break (Lacy jokes that it's too long to fit on a single Nexus 7 screen, which is saying something), and some demo video is ready to go there as well. The update should be live in Google Play any time now.

Channing Tatum is no stranger to fast-paced, heart-pumping action films, but the 32-year-old actor is bracing himself for his most challenging role yet: Fatherhood.?
"The rest of this year is going to be pretty nuts," he told Us Weekly at the NYC premiere of his new crime drama thriller Side Effects on Thursday, Jan. 31. "Even during having the baby -- the baby-having process -- it's going to be intense."

Tatum and his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, also 32, have been happily anticipating the new addition to their family since they first announced her first-time pregnancy back in December.
"Channing is so excited for the baby," a pal of the couple told Us at the time. "He's been wanting this a long time. They are over the moon about becoming parents."
The couple first met on the set of dance flick Step Up in 2006 and married in a beachside ceremony in Malibu, Calif. three years later, on July 11, 2009.

But with the new baby on the way, Tatum tells Us that he's hoping to slow down a bit in his professional career. The actor had an impressive five films out in 2012 -- Haywire, The Vow, 21 Jump Street, Magic Mike and Ten Year -- so this year will be about getting behind the camera, he explained.
"We're going to take a break and my [production] partner [Reid Carolin] and I, we're going to try to like direct and do some things like that," he told Us.

The actor expressed similar sentiments back in December, prior to announcing the baby news.
"We have about three to four ideas that we love that are all in the hopper. By the end of next year, we're going to shut things down and write the first thing that we're going to direct," Tatum told Entertainment Weekly at the beginning of December. "We're going to be like, alright, no more acting parts for a minute, let's take a few and really get caring about that section of our career."

APNewsBreak: Marines issue survey on women's role
SAN DIEGO (AP) ? A Marine Corps survey found about 17 percent of male Marine respondents said they would likely leave the Corps if women move into combat positions.
That number jumped to 22 percent if women are assigned involuntarily to those jobs, according to the survey.
Male Marines also listed among their top concerns fears about being falsely accused of sexual harassment or assault, fraternization or some Marines getting preferential treatment. They also worried women would be limited because of pregnancy or personal issues that could affect the unit before they are sent to the battlefield.
Results of the survey of 53,000 Marines were released to The Associated Press on Friday.
The survey was conducted last summer and the results were given to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta before he opened thousands of combat jobs to female service members last week.
Both sexes surveyed mentioned intimate relationships between Marines and feeling obligated to protect female Marines among their top five concerns about allowing women into ground combat jobs.
Women Marines listed among their top three concerns enemies targeting women as POWs, the risk of sexual harassment or assault and hygiene requirements, according to the results which did not given specifics.
The survey asked female Marines if they would feel pressured to suppress their femininity, something equal rights activists found offensive.
About 4 percent of female Marines surveyed said they would consider leaving if the ban was lifted. Even more would drop out if women were put into those positions involuntarily with about 17 percent of female respondents expressing they would cut their careers short under those circumstances.
About 31 percent of female respondents say they would be interested in moving into a combat position.
The commandant of the Marine Corps said the infantry side of the most male of all military branches is skeptical about how women will perform in their units, and some positions may end up closed again if too few females meet the physically demanding standards of combat.
Gen. James Amos made the remarks to reporters Thursday at a defense conference in San Diego hosted by the U.S. Naval Institute and the defense trade group AFCEA.
Amos says most Marines support the policy change. He pointed out that over the past decade, many male service members already have been fighting alongside women in Iraq and Afghanistan. Women who serve in supply troops, as clerks and with military police have ended up on the unmarked front lines of modern warfare, blurring the distinction between combat and noncombat jobs. More than 150 women have been killed in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while serving in support roles.
Many of the newly opened positions are in Army and Marine infantry units and in potentially elite commando jobs. It will be up to the military service chiefs to recommend and defend whether women should be excluded from any of those more demanding and deadly positions, such as Navy commandos or the Army's Delta Force.
The infantry units are smaller and spend more grueling time in battle.
"I think from the infantry side of the house, you know they're more skeptical," Amos said. "It's been an all-male organization throughout the history of the U.S. Marine Corps so I don't think that should be any surprise."
The Marine Corps is the most male of all the military branches. About 7 percent of Marines are female compared to about 14 percent overall for the armed forces.

NYC's landmark Grand Central Terminal turns 100
NEW YORK (AP) ? New Yorkers marked the 100th birthday of Grand Central Terminal and ended up celebrating the legacy of another emblem of the city, former Mayor Ed Koch, who died early Friday and who supported efforts to spare Grand Central from demolition.
The always bustling terminal was even more crowded than usual as tourists and commuters leaned in to hear birthday speeches under the twinkling constellations that adorn the main concourse's soaring ceiling.
The ceremony started with a moment of silence for Koch, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg then praised both his predecessor and Grand Central.
"We almost lost this extraordinary building, if you remember, back in the '70s," Bloomberg said. "And as a matter of fact, at that time the whole city was crumbling, and then we elected Ed Koch."
Bloomberg said Koch "really would have wanted us to celebrate his life and the life of the city he loved. So I think it's only fitting that we're gathered here today to celebrate the life of another New York City icon, Grand Central Terminal."
Friday's party took place exactly 100 years after the keys to Grand Central were first given to the stationmaster on Feb. 1, 1913.
Conceived as a palace of train travel, the majestic Beaux Arts building now houses the Metro-North Railroad, a commuter line serving New York's northern suburbs, with connections to the subway system. It is also a shopping and dining destination and one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.
But as several speakers recounted, Grand Central was in danger of being demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new office tower. It was saved by preservationists including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
Caroline Kennedy said her mother was a native New Yorker who cared deeply about the city and mourned the loss of buildings like the old Penn Station, torn down in the 1960s and replaced with Madison Square Garden.
"She understood how great public spaces can help build community," Kennedy said.
Kennedy read from a letter Onassis wrote to then-Mayor Abe Beame in 1975 urging him to support saving Grand Central. "It would be so noble if you were to go down in history as the man who was brave enough to stem the tide," Onassis wrote.
Robert Tierney, chairman of the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission, said noted that a newspaper recently ran a 1970s photo of Onassis and Koch, then a member of Congress, "leading the charge, leading the fight to save this building." He called it "a poignant memory."
The fight for Grand Central went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in 1978 that saving Grand Central under the city's Landmarks Preservation Act did not constitute a "taking" but was a reasonable use of regulatory power. The decision was the first time the court ruled on a preservation issue and paved the way for saving other historic structures.
"There are so many great buildings and neighborhoods that could well not be here today but for the landmarks law being upheld," Tierney said.
The birthday party started with a performance by the West Point Brass and Percussion Band, which played a "Grand Central Centennial Fanfare" commissioned for the occasion. Melissa Manchester sang Cole Porter's love song to the city, "I Happen to Like New York," written in 1930 when Grand Central was just 17.
Speakers included actress Cynthia Nixon and former New York Mets star Keith Hernandez, who said he often took the No. 7 subway train from Grand Central out to Shea Stadium.
"Welcome, everybody, to New York's other great playing field," Hernandez said. "I love this building."
A high school choir from the Bronx sang "Happy Birthday" as bakery workers wheeled out a cake shaped like Grand Central's famous clock, which has served as a meeting place for generations of New Yorkers.
Patricia Stacey of New Rochelle paused on her way to work and said she never tires of Grand Central.
"I stop each day and look up because it's such a pleasure to come through here," she said.
The celebration will continue with events throughout 2013, including a performance piece by artist Nick Cave in March and a parade of historic trains in May.
Several of Grand Central's businesses were offering 1913 deals for Friday's birthday celebration, including a 75-cent cocktail at Michael Jordan's The Steak House NYC and a 19-cent slice of cheesecake at the Oyster Bar. There were long lines at most of the businesses offering the price rollbacks.

Chemistry is basically a puzzle game, right? A puzzle game I was so utterly terrible at that I got an N for my A Level in the dastardly subject. Fortunately, Alan Hazelden and Harry Lee?s forthcoming Sokobond is a chemistry puzzle that I can at least start playing without hideous memories sending me trembling into a corner.
The trailer for the game is deliberately ambiguous. See:
That?s because a part of the game ? of which I?ve had a quick go ? is about discovering the aims. Aims you?ll have seen are based around the bonding of chemicals. One of the few elements of chemistry I could get my head around, unlike how I?m supposed to know the reagents of changing benzene molecules, or mole-based calculations. (For one chemistry A level paper, after realising I couldn?t answer a single question, I plotted a graph on my graphic calculator that rendered a train on the screen, with smoke coming out of the chimney at the end. This was not marked.) There are elements of Sokoban, mixed up with SCIENCE, creating what I think would make just about the best imaginable tool for teaching year 8/9 chemistry students the complexities of covalent bonding.
It?s in the Greenlight dungeon at the moment, and success there will likely determine a release date.
