UFC fighters make their Super Bowl XLI picks

LAS VEGAS -- Athletes are athletes. Every sports has its stars, grunts and primadonnas.

Super Bowl XLI and the NFL have too many to count, but so does the UFC. Scott Bemis from the local CBS television affiliate in Las Vegas decided to mix the two worlds. Check out Roy Nelson and myself on KLAS trying to come up with our star QB, diva receiver, kicker, coach and intimidating hitter from the UFC.

Everyone loves the NFL. the audience in the U.S. is expected to top 150 million. Plenty of fighters will be glued to a TV set or partying around Super Bowl XLI. The promotion asked several of the fighters for their plays on the game.

Georges St-Pierre, UFC welterweight champion
"I've not a clue about the rules of football but I will be screaming for New York because it's the closest city to Montreal."

Carlos Condit, UFC interim welterweight title challenger
"I'm going to take the New York Giants. Sometimes being an underdog is the greatest motivation. I'm an underdog against Diaz this Saturday and it's going to be the weekend of the dog."

Roy Nelson, UFC heavyweight
"My picks for game day are Bud Light for the bud bowl. As for the other entertainment on that day, I have not picked my favorite commercial yet but it is usually the one with bigger budget, but the Cinderella story can always happen and that's why I love the tournament format. As for the filler, I don't have a pick but it definitely will be a showdownwith the New York Giants and New England, but my bet is on the one with "New" in their name."

Josh Koscheck, UFC welterweight
"I am mad because those are not my two favorite teams. That said, I think it should be a good, hard fought game. I'm not sure who will come out on top."

Brendan Schaub, UFC heavyweight
"My prediction for the game is it's going to be a good game--high scoring from both teams. In order for the Giants to win, they have to get pressure on Tom Brady from the D-line so he can't sit in the pocket and drop bombs to his monster tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski, however even with that being said I think New England will be just too much for the Giants and pull off a late 4th quarter game-winning drive adding to the Brady legacy."

Clifford Starks, UFC middleweight
"I have to go with the Patriots, I know that they remember the last time they lost to the Giants and they are looking to take that bitter taste out of their mouth."

Max Holloway, UFC featherweight
"I'm going to have to take the Giants. I think they've got the defense to hold Brady and his offense down. Also because Eli is one lucky dude I swear. I think he could close his eyes and throw the ball and it would land into one of his receivers' hands. The Giants are just something else when they play in the post-season. Their wide receivers have just been on these last couple of games."

Matt Brown, UFC welterweight
"I predict the Patriots will win simply because New England is title town. My fianc? is from Massachusetts, home of the Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins. All the winning teams are from MA so there is no way the Pats will walk away defeated. It also helps that Patriots QB Tom Brady has the best record of any NFL quarterback in the modern era with at least 100 starts."

Chris Cope, UFC welterweight
"I'm picking the Patriots because their offensive line is stacked and Brady is always clutch during the playoffs! Woooooooooooo!!!!!!!! Patriots!"

Stephen Thompson, UFC welterweight
"Eli Manning's offense is very strong which will allow him to move the ball well especially in the air. Their D line is strong which will allow their D-Backs to do their jobs."

Edwin Figueroa, UFC bantamweight
"Personally, I'm from Texas and when it comes to football I bleed silver and blue - Cowboys all the way win or lose! Onlytrue fans can say that! On that note though, I'm rooting for the Patriots to avenge their 2008 final loss to the Giants. Go Pats!"

Ed Herman, UFC middleweight
"I'm going to have to go with the underdog Giants. I enjoy rooting for the underdog plus their defense has been stellar. Go Giants!"

Scott Jorgensen, UFC bantamweight
"Patriots over the Giants! AFC east all the way! If it ain't the Bills in the bowl, I want to see the division do well to justify the Bills performance."

Super Bowl weekend is huge in Sin City. The UFC's decision to hold a Super Saturday card each year in Vegas is brilliant. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is estimating an additional 286,000 people will come to town. Hotels are at near 90-percent occupancy and the non-gaming revenue generated by this weekend is $87 million.

Romney plays Trump card in Las Vegas (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? After stumbling with remarks suggesting he was indifferent to America's poor, Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney was endorsed on Thursday by one of the country's most famous wealthy businessmen - real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump.

Trump, who put his own net worth at up to $7 billion, said he was backing Romney in the race for the nomination to oppose President Barack Obama in the November 6 election because of his knowledge of the economy.

"Mitt is tough, he's smart, he's sharp," Trump said, standing before a line of American flags at his Trump International Hotel, Romney and his wife, Ann, to his right.

"He's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen in this country we all love. So, Governor Romney, go out and get 'em. You can do it," Trump said. He said he was willing to campaign for Romney and would consider donating to his Super PAC - the independent political group spending tens of millions of dollars in support of Romney.

Romney cemented his position as Republican front-runner by trouncing rival Newt Gingrich in Florida's primary on Tuesday, and holds a strong lead in polls of likely Nevada voters ahead of the state's caucuses on Saturday.

The ex-Massachusetts governor and former private equity executive says his private sector experience makes him the best candidate to right the troubled U.S. economy. He praised Trump's business acumen as he thanked him for his support.

"I've had some success in the private sector. Not quite as successful as this guy, but successful nonetheless," Romney said.

Trump's support could backfire on Romney, the son of a former governor and corporate chief executive who is worth some $270 million.

Romney's comments about poor Americans on Wednesday, during what should have been a victory lap after his Florida triumph, underscored the challenge he faces convincing voters hit by the economic downturn he can relate to their problems.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor, we have a safety net there," Romney said on CNN. "If it needs repair, I'll fix it."

GLITZ AND GLAMOUR

Trump cultivates an aura of glitz and glamour and has been derided for pushing a discredited charge that Obama was not born in the United States. He has toyed with entering the presidential race himself, possibly as a third-party candidate.

"This signifies a further consolidation of the Republican base," Republican strategist Ford O'Connell said.

"But, given Romney's comments yesterday, I could see (Obama's campaign) would like to tie this as a way to portray Mitt Romney as someone who is not in touch with the plight of the average American."

The Democratic National Committee quickly seized the opportunity to release a video titled, "Mitt Romney and Donald Trump: They both like firing people," referring to the tagline of Trump's TV reality show "The Apprentice" and an earlier Romney gaffe, "I like being able to fire people."

Trump said he was impressed with Romney's tough talk on China, India and OPEC. Romney criticizes China's trade policy frequently as he campaigns, and he lashed out again on Thursday.

"They've taken jobs from Americans. They haven't played fair. We have to have a president who will stand up to cheaters," Romney said.

Trump announced he was leaving the Republican party in December after most of the Republican White House hopefuls, including Romney, declined to participate in a debate he planned to host. But from the Romney team's perspective it is better to have the casino and hotel owner with them than against them.

Romney has won two of the first four contests in the state-by-state process of choosing a nominee, taking primaries in New Hampshire and Florida by healthy margins. Gingrich won South Carolina's primary, and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum won Iowa's caucuses by a narrow margin over Romney.

Romney seemed to snatch Trump's backing from Gingrich after U.S. media reported late on Wednesday he was supporting the former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, whose presidential campaign has been struggling since his upset victory over Romney in South Carolina on January 21.

Gingrich hit Romney for his comments on the poor.

"I really believe that we should care about the very poor, unlike Governor Romney. But I believe we should care differently from President Obama," he said during a campaign stop at a Las Vegas manufacturing plant.

"What the poor need is a trampoline so they can spring up. I'm for replacing the safety net with a trampoline."

A Fox News poll in January suggested support from Trump could do a candidate more harm than good. Twenty-seven percent of those surveyed said his endorsement would make them less likely to vote for a candidate.

"It doesn't change my vote," said Sue Mathis, 52, of Las Vegas, who backs Gingrich. "It means absolutely nothing. Trump is a good businessman, but a Steve Wynn endorsement would influence me more," she said, referring to the billionaire Las Vegas casino magnate.

Romney won Nevada's caucuses easily during the 2008 campaign, thanks largely to support from his fellow Mormons, who account for about 25 percent of Republican caucus-goers.

"The LDS (Mormon) thing cannot be understated in a Republican caucus," said David Damore, a political scientist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "They are obviously very energized. It's an opportunity to back one of their own."

Microsoft Updates Kinect Hardware For Official Windows Release

01We've known for some time that Microsoft would be bringing official Kinect support to Windows this week, but one thing they kept quiet was the fact that they'd be debuting a new version of the hardware as well. It's not tiny, as some hoped, or built into the bezel of a laptop, as we know it will be eventually, but it does improve on the original in a few ways.

NASA Probe Discovers 'Alien' Matter From Beyond Our Solar System (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 2:26 p.m. EST.

For the very first time, a NASA spacecraft has detected matter from outside our solar system ? material that came from elsewhere in the galaxy, researchers announced today (Jan. 31).

This so-called interstellar material was spotted by NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), a spacecraft that is studying the edge of the solar system from its orbit about 200,000 miles (322,000 kilometers) above Earth.

"This alien interstellar material is really the stuff that stars and planets and people are made of ? it's really important to be measuring it," David McComas, IBEX principal investigator and assistant vice president of the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, said in a news briefing today from NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

An international team of scientists presented new findings from IBEX, which included the first detection of alien particles of hydrogen, oxygen and neon, in addition to the confirmation of previously detected helium. [Images from NASA's IBEX Mission]

These atoms are remnants of older stars that have ended their lives in violent explosions, called supernovas, which dispersed the elements throughout the galaxy. As interstellar wind blows these charged and neutral particles through the Milky Way, the IBEX probe is able to create a census of the elements that are present.

Heavy elements in space

According to the new study, the researchers found 74 oxygen atoms for every 20 neon atoms in the interstellar wind. For comparison, there are 111 oxygen atoms for every 20 neon atoms in our solar system, meaning there are more oxygen atoms in any part of the solar system than in nearby interstellar space, the scientists said in a statement.

"These are important elements to know quantitatively because they are the building blocks of stars, planets, people," McComas said. "We discovered this puzzle: matter outside our solar system doesn't look like material inside our solar system. It seems to be deficient in oxygen compared to neon."

The presence of less oxygen within interstellar material could indicate that the sun formed in a region with less oxygen compared to its current location, the researchers said.

Or, it could be a sign that oxygen is "locked up" in other galactic materials, such as cosmic grains of dust or ice. [Top 10 Strangest Things in Space]

"That leaves us with a puzzle for now: could it be that some of that oxygen, which is so crucial for life on Earth, is locked up in the cosmic dust?" asked Eberhard M?bius, a professor at the University of New Hampshire and a visiting professor at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. "Or, does it tell us how different our neighborhood is compared to the sun's birthplace?"

IBEX also measured the interstellar wind traveling at a slower speed and from a different direction than was previously thought. The research now shows that the interstellar wind exerts 20 percent less pressure on our heliosphere, which is a protective bubble that shields our solar system from powerful, damaging cosmic rays.

"Measuring the pressure on our heliosphere from the material in the galaxy and from the magnetic fields out there will help determine the size and shape of our solar system as it travels through the galaxy," Eric Christian, IBEX mission scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement.

A history of the universe

The results of the new study will also help scientists shed light on the history of the material in the universe.

"It tells us things about the part of space that we live in, and the interaction with that part of space with the rest of the galaxy," McComas said.

The observations from IBEX and the ability to determine the ratio of elements in space could help scientists understand how the galaxy has evolved and changed over time.

"I find it really exciting that right on our front doorstep, we can take a sample of this interstellar matter around us," M?bius said. "If you think back all the way to the Big Bang, there was only hydrogen and helium. Then stars and supernovas sprinkled it with heavy elements ? if you imagine that we are made out of the material that has been belched out of the supernovas, and it is continuing. So, 4.5 billion years ago, the sun formed out of the solar nebula, and now we are sampling part of the Milky Way as it is today. It gives us nice data points ? Big Bang and the sun's formation to what is our environment. Then modelers can go and trace how that material has evolved over time in the cosmos." ??

The findings are detailed in a series of papers that were published today in the Astrophysical Journal.

NASA launched the IBEX mission in October 2008 to map the boundary between the solar system and interstellar space. The $169 million spacecraft was originally built for a two-year mission.

IBEX measures and counts particles called energetic neutral atoms, which are created in an area of our solar system known as the interstellar boundary region. Since its launch, the spacecraft has already made groundbreaking discoveries about the heliosphere and the boundary between our solar system and interstellar space.

In 2009, IBEX detected a mysterious ribbon on the edge of the solar system made up of a stream of charged particles that travels a million miles per hour from the sun. In 2010, researchers announced that IBEX had witnessed the first-ever look at solar wind crashing into Earth's magnetosphere.

Secretary of State Clinton Wearies of Public Service, to Step Down Soon (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | According to the Envoy, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has indicated she will not serve in a potential second Barack Obama term. She has announced she is weary of the "high wire" of American politics.

Clinton has been involved in national politics in one capacity or another for 20 years. As first lady she was involved in an early attempt to create a national health care regime, an attempt that collapsed shortly before the 1994 Republican takeover of Congress led by Newt Gingrich.

In 2000 Clinton was elected to the Senate from New York despite the fact she had not lived in the state. She was re-elected in 2006. Clinton was a presidential candidate in 2008 and was widely expected to win the Democratic nomination in a walk. But she and her supporters did not figure into their considerations a then young, unknown senator named Barack Obama, who won the nomination and the general election. President Obama named Clinton his Secretary of State, an office she now holds.

Clinton's tenure as first lady during the Bill Clinton administration was, to say the least, fraught with controversy. Chief among the scandals Clinton had to deal with was the Whitewater affair, according to the Washington Post. Whitewater was a shady land deal in Arkansas that Clinton was involved in. While Clinton friends, including Jim and Susan McDougal, went to jail over Whitewater-related convictions, Clinton was able to escape legal if not political trouble.

Clinton also played the put-upon wife during her husband's various sex scandals, especially the Monica Lewinsky affair. Her decision to stand by her husband rewarded her with her separate political career, starting with her election to the Senate. According to Govtrack, Sen. Clinton sponsored 363 bills from 2001 to 2009, 11 of which were passed into law.

Clinton's run for the presidency was seen as an attempt to create a Clinton Restoration after the eight-year administration of George W. Bush. However, the younger, more novel Obama came from nowhere and took the nomination from her. She has had to content herself with being Secretary of State as the capstone of her career in public service.
